The Complete Guide to Reed Diffusers: How to Choose, Place & Make Them Last Longer
This guide covers everything you need to know — from choosing the right diffuser to making it last as long as possible.
What Is a Reed Diffuser?
A reed diffuser consists of three parts: a fragrance oil, a vessel (bottle or base), and reed sticks. The reeds absorb the oil and diffuse the fragrance into the air through capillary action — no flame, no electricity, no effort.
How to Choose the Right Reed Diffuser
1. Match the size of the diffuser to the room
A small 50ml diffuser is perfect for a bathroom or study table. For a living room or bedroom, you want something larger — 100ml or above. Using a small diffuser in a large room means you'll barely notice the fragrance.
2. Choose the right scent for the space
- Bedroom: Lavender, chamomile, sandalwood — calming, sleep-inducing scents
- Living room: Citrus, floral, or woody scents — welcoming and fresh
- Study/workspace: Lemongrass, eucalyptus, mint — focus-enhancing scents
- Pooja room / entrance: Jasmine, rose, mogra — traditional and uplifting
3. Look at the base material
The vessel isn't just functional — it's décor. At The Craftsman, our diffuser bases are crafted from marble, wood, and glass. Our Gardenia Reed Diffuser has a round wooden base, while the Lemon Grass Reed Diffuser uses a square marble base — both designed to complement your home.

How to Place Your Reed Diffuser for Maximum Fragrance
- Near air movement: Place diffusers near a doorway, window, or fan — gentle airflow carries the scent further
- At mid-height: On a shelf or side table, not on the floor — fragrance rises, so mid-height placement maximises coverage
- Away from direct sunlight: UV light degrades fragrance oils faster — keep diffusers out of direct sun
- Not in the kitchen: Cooking smells overpower diffuser fragrances — keep them in rooms with stable air
How to Make Your Reed Diffuser Last Longer
Flip the reeds regularly
Every 1–2 weeks, flip the reeds so the saturated end is in the air and the dry end is in the oil. This refreshes the fragrance output without wasting oil.
Use fewer reeds for a lighter scent, more for stronger
Most diffusers come with 6–10 reeds. Start with 4–5 for a subtle fragrance, or use all of them for maximum throw. More reeds = faster oil consumption.
Keep the vessel covered when not in use
If you're going on holiday or won't be home for a while, cover the vessel opening to slow evaporation.
Frame Reed Diffusers — A Unique Innovation
At The Craftsman, we've taken the reed diffuser concept further with our exclusive Frame Reed Diffuser collection. These combine a decorative pine wood frame with a reed diffuser base — giving you wall-worthy art and a room fragrance in one single piece.

When to Replace Your Reed Diffuser
When the oil runs out, you can either refill with diffuser oil or replace the entire unit. The reeds themselves should be replaced with every refill — used reeds get clogged with oil residue and stop working effectively.
